About

Hi, fellow mamas and teachers!! I set up this page to give you an idea of what I’m all about. Read on to find out a little more about me and my mission at Mrs Mama Bird.

I am a teacher and a mother.

When I graduated college, I got my first teaching job in a fourth grade classroom. I taught elementary school for a little over 5 years before my first son was born. When my maternity leave was coming to an end, I decided to hang up my teacher hat for a little while and focus on being his mom. Three kids later, I still wanted to stay home with them even though I could feel a longing for the classroom pulling at my heart. I felt my creative energies were being squelched and I desperately wanted to get my ideas and resources into the hands of other teachers. I decided to become a teacher author for Teachers Pay Teachers and start this blog as a way to embody two of my most important callings: teaching and nurturing. This is the reason I decided to call myself “Mrs. Mama.”

I am a fire wife.

Some of you may not know, but community helpers like to date and marry each other!! My husband is a firefighter and I am a teacher, which tends to be a common combination. I never have trouble making conversation with other fire wives at fire department parties because I always find another teacher or two. Being a fire wife makes our family’s schedule very different from the typical weekend warriors. This is another reason why I love making this blog for you. I can work around my husband’s long shifts and in between all the loads of navy blue laundry!!

I have three curious kids.

My oldest is Caleb, a non-stop, bug-loving little boy. He has an amazing sense of humor and is always trying to figure out how things work. He has two settings: full speed and off. I often use the words intense to describe him, but really he is so very passionate.

My middle is Emmett, a tender-hearted peacekeeper. He also loves bugs and critters and ninja moves. His smile can light up the room and he constantly reminds us to find joy in all the little things.

And last, but certainly not least, my youngest is Lillian. She is a red-headed little firecracker. We call her Lillly lungs, Adventure Baby, and Squeaky Wheel. She always makes her presence known but she is funny, spontaneous, and loves to dance.

I love nature.

There is something very calming about being outdoors for me. All three of my kiddos can spend hours outside. “Outside” was actually one of Lillian’s first words. We live in Maryland, on a wooded lot, so we get to experience all four seasons and the beauty that comes with it. I try to incorporate nature into our time together, which is what the bird in Mrs Mama Bird symbolizes.

I am passionate about literacy.

Teaching language arts is my absolute favorite. I love reading. I love writing. I love children’s literature. Opening the world of literacy up to a child feels like giving them a precious gift. Isn’t it the absolute best when your little toddler plops down into your lap for another book?? Or when the students in your class can’t bare to stay seated as you turn the pages of the book you’re reading aloud?? I’ve taught language arts on every elementary level and you will find most of my resources will have a literacy connection.
