One of the many things that I love about fall is finding all the fall loose parts and adding them to our learning!! Loose parts play invitations are always so engaging! Little learners love to explore and manipulate the little pieces, keeping them engaged and sparking lots of imagination. Not to mention that encouraging your preschoolers to manipulate small objects is the best way to get their hand muscles ready for gripping a pencil and writing.

In this blog post, you will find several ideas for incorporating loose parts into your play and learning as well as a FREE set of printable Shape Loose Parts Mats. Please note: Loose parts play is intended for children ages 3 and up. Small objects can be choking hazards for children under 3 years old. Always offer loose parts under adult supervision.

Let’s start with invitations to play! Sometimes all you need to make a play invitation is to add one new element to an existing toy. This inspires your little ones to play with it in a new way. Adding small pumpkins to this farm set turned it into a pumpkin patch! Visiting the pumpkin patch in the fall is always a fun activity to dramatize. You can even practice counting pumpkins, talk about colors or discuss small, medium and large if you have different sizes.

Fall is the perfect time to explore elements of the forest like leaves, sticks, wooden rounds, mushrooms, forest animals, acorns and pine cones. Preschoolers love to arrange all of the elements as they play. They can set up a forest scene, act out a scenario with the animals or simply arrange the elements by size, shape or color. The important part is to let their curiosity lead.

Creating sensory bins with the fall forest elements is another fun way to incorporate loose parts play into your fall activities. Pinto beans make the perfect fall base because their tan shade blends in with the fall elements. Let your preschoolers scoop, pour, count, sift and explore all of the parts of the bin. Wooden bowls and scoops are a perfect addition to a sensory bin like this.

If you like to treasure hunt, be on the lookout for loose parts in the seasonal section of craft and party stores! I love utilizing acrylic party scatter for loose parts play. Dollar Tree, Michaels and Hobby Lobby are my favorite places to explore for loose parts. I also love finding festive plates, dishes or trays to present the loose parts in. Many of the loose parts and accessories that I feature in this blog are collected from several stores over the years, but I will include as many links as I can at the end of this post in case you need them.

Let’s talk about loose parts and learning activities! I created these Fall Loose Parts Mats to encourage some easy fine motor work. Just allow your preschooler to add the small trinkets as they see fit to complete the picture. If you have translucent pieces, these are so fun to add to the light table!

You can even add a dice and practice counting pieces as they add on. This can be an individual activity or a partner activity. Just have your preschooler roll the dice, say the number and count out that many pieces to add to the picture. This is great practice for subitizing and one to one correspondence.

I also love to use loose parts to practice letter and number formation! I created these adorable Fall Building Mats to help preschoolers practice naming and constructing letters, numbers and shapes with loose parts. This activity will familiarize your preschoolers with the structure of the letters and numbers to help them get ready to eventually write them. Placing small parts inside the guide to build each letter, number or shape strengthens fine motor skills and encourages their body to cross the midline which is really important for brain development.
